A certain amount of sweating is normal and helps us to cool down when we’re too hot. However, sometimes the body produces more sweat than it needs to. This is called hyperhidrosis. We understand the impact this condition can have on everyday life, which is why we can offer Botox™ treatment to help reduce excessive sweating.

Diagnosing hyperhidrosis

If you think you might have hyperhidrosis, our Dr will discuss your symptoms with you at your initial consultation.

If you have excessive sweating under your armpits (also known as axillary hyperhidrosis) it may be associated with anxiety or another health condition. Our Dr will be able to tell you if they think there might be an underlying reason and offer treatment if needed.

Treating hyperhidrosis

Botox injections are a safe and effective way to reduce sweating. They work by blocking a chemical in your body that stimulates the sweat glands. This treatment is safe and works for most people although it isn’t recommended if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a heart or muscle condition.

The treatment

A local anaesthetic cream or injection to numb your skin before giving you several injections into each armpit using a fine needle. Your armpits may be a bit sensitive and sore after the injections.

Usually the treatment starts to work in the first week and lasts for around four to seven months, depending on the severity of your condition and the dose given to you. Once the treatment has stopped working, you’ll need to have the injections again. Treatments need to be at least four months apart.

If you’d like to know more about botox injections and hyperhidrosis, our patient leaflet gives a complete overview of the causes and symptoms of the condition, plus information about what to expect should you decide to have botox treatment.
